“She was always one step ahead, she always knew what I might need.”

She was so supportive and it felt so natural, she was able to read the room very well and you could tell with her experience of knowing what would help, and had a great attitude…she was just very open and supportive.

"It really helped ease my anxiety and feel prepared for what was to come for the actual birth experience."

Just having such a strong advocate in our corner made a huge difference in the way that we both felt during the birth.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the process of hiring a doula for birth?

Our process is simple. Send an inquiry through our website or email hello@chicagofamilydoulas.com. We will reply promptly and arrange a complimentary one-hour intake call with one of our family coordinators. After getting to know your family, our doula coordinator team will carefully consider your requests and match you with the perfect birth doula. You’ll have the opportunity to virtually meet your doula. If you choose to move forward, we’ll send you a virtual contract to sign as well as a birth deposit invoice. Your birth doula will begin communication with you as soon as the contract is signed and deposit is paid.

How do I choose my doula?

We will match you with a doula based on the complimentary intake call. Our doula coordinators know our team very well and will match you with a doula that is a perfect fit for your family.

Do you support families who are having a hospital birth?

Yes, about 95% of our clients deliver at the hospital.

Do you support families delivering at home or at a birth center?

Yes, we do support both birth center births and homebirths. At birth centers and homebirths, it will be highly encouraged (and in some cases required) that you have the support of a doula.

How will my doula support me if I have a Cesarean?

Whether it is a planned or unplanned cesarean, your doula will be a strong support during pregnancy and birth. They will be with you throughout the day helping you emotionally and mentally prepare, and stay until you are settled in with your baby. All births can be overwhelming and your doula will do all they can to help you feel supported and cared for.

If my partner is already very supportive, how can a doula still help?

A birth doula is supportive for both you and your partner. Most partners want to be helpful and are uncertain how to be. A doula understands birth and coping and partners appreciate our guidance so they can be a strong support.

If I already love my doctor or midwife, how can I benefit from doula support?

We are so happy you love your doctor or midwife: that is what we hope for. Your medical provider typically works on a team with many other doctors or midwives so you may not know the doctor or midwife that is at your birth as they work on rotation. They also are not there very often. They may stop in and check on you, but will come and go. Your doula will be with you throughout the process helping you cope and providing emotional support.

What happens if my doula is not available the day of?

This is so rare and typically happens only due to illness. If this happens, we have an admin on-call 24 hours a day and she will be sure to match you with a strong back up doula. This is rare, but we make it simple.
