Meet Jessica H.

newborn care chicago

Jessica (she/her) is a trauma-informed DONA-trained postpartum doula who sees birthwork as an extraordinary gift of trust, and an imperative of reproductive justice. She is passionate about supporting parents through the process and into their fourth trimester.  She has a deep respect for this time of healing, bonding, growth, and pleasure. A natural advocate and caretaker, her approach to working with families centers consent, communication, and collaboration between partner(s), baby, and each family’s unique community of support.

Jessica specializes in working with first-time parents of both singletons and multiples, and particularly enjoys supporting fellow LGBTQ+ families and neurodivergent clients, helping to smooth the transition into parenthood through meeting baby’s and parents’ practical day-to-day needs while making space for all the big, complicated feelings. With years of experience as a child caretaker and educator, Jessica takes an evidence-based approach and keeps up to date on the latest research on child development and newborn care. Her clients appreciate her emotional awareness, playfulness, and calm demeanor in moments of stress. She takes pride in non-judgmental deep listening and helping families to ground into their intuition as they build trust and confidence in themselves and one another.

Outside of doula-ing, Jessica is completing her PhD in Art History, writing a dissertation on community media, activist art, and art education in Chicago. After many years in academia, she realized that her natural gifts — caring for others, tending to friends and family, building community, teaching through curiosity and collaboration — were better suited to a career where “work” could mean simply being her authentic self.

In her free time, Jessica enjoys biking and climbing with her wife, cuddling with her cats, going on walks to pick up a little treat, and reading fantasy or mystery novels.
