Birth trauma is a significant, but often unspoken issue. Up to 17% of birthing parents experience birth-related post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Many more experience symptoms of trauma without a formal diagnosis. While birth trauma is often overlooked or dismissed, it is necessary to initiate conversations and encourage proactive steps in our community. This will ensure mothers are not suffering in silence and bearing the emotional toll alone.

What is Birth Trauma?

Birth trauma involves the perception of actual or threatened injury or death to the mother or baby. It extends beyond physical harm, encompassing feelings of loss of control, inadequate support, or dismissive treatment from medical professionals.

Traumatic birth experiences can include emergency c-sections, preterm labor, unexpected NICU stays, and the lasting emotional impact of these events. Birth trauma is subjective; what may be traumatic for one person may not be for another, and all experiences are valid.

Risk Factors

Several factors increase the risk of birth trauma, including deviations from birth plans, prolonged or painful labor, birth-related injuries, unexpected medical interventions, previous miscarriage, pregnancy loss, stillbirth or neonatal death, lack of supportive care, and a history of mental health challenges (anxiety, depression) or previous traumatic birth experiences.

Preventing Birth Trauma

To minimize the risk of birth trauma:

  •  Educate Yourself: Attend childbirth classes to understand the birthing process, which can empower you and reduce the likelihood of trauma.
  • Manage Expectations: Acknowledge the unpredictability of birth and remain flexible with your birth plan. While birth plans are helpful, they should be adaptable to ensure a healthy outcome for both mother and baby.
  • Advocate for Supportive Care: Choose healthcare providers who offer respectful, patient-centered care. Engaging in open, preventative dialogues with your medical team and having a support person during prenatal visits can help ensure your needs are met.
  • Seek Emotional Support: Turning towards loved ones, partnering with a supportive doula and engaging in therapy, particularly with a therapist specializing in perinatal mental health, can provide valuable tools to manage stress, anxiety, and unexpected emotions.

Healing from Birth Trauma

Recovery from birth trauma is complex and requires a multifaceted approach:

  • Seek Professional Help: Trauma-informed perinatal mental health specialists can offer evidence-based treatments like somatic experiencing (Brainspotting and EMDR), Mindfulness techniques, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help process and heal from birth trauma.
  • Build Support Systems: Lean on compassionate friends, family, or support groups. Peer support can significantly enhance mental health during the perinatal period.
  • Practice Self-Care: Prioritize self-care, including nourishing your body, engaging in gentle movement, connecting with loved ones, and practicing mindfulness. Restorative practices like massage and acupuncture can further support your recovery.
  • Utilize Resources: Organizations like Postpartum Support International (PSI) provide valuable support and guidance, including access to hotlines, local practitioners, classes, and support groups.
