Meet Lissah

Best Doulas Chicago

Lissah has been a full Spectrum Birth & Postpartum doula since 2018.  She is a Certified doula through Doula Trainings International. She loves that she is able to support and care for families through pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

Her work as a doula and birth keeper serves to offer all families the support, love, education, care & advocacy that they need & deserve. She believes deeply that it is her duty to hold space for clients to experience compassion, validation, reassurance, empowerment, & confidence during every phase of their reproductive journey— from fertility to postpartum, and beyond.

She has trained under elder and with peer midwives, doulas, and birth assistants, receiving traditional hands-on training and skills. She has a deep knowledge in birth and specializes in Spontaneous Physiological Birth, home birth, birth at birth centers and in hospitals and Afro-Indigenous Birth Practices.  She enjoys empowering families with medicated and unmedicated, induced and spontaneous birth. She has found innovative ways to integrate African-Indigenous knowledge with modern birth practices.

Lissah is a life long learner and continues to grow her offerings to better support all families.  She incorporates her learning to meet each of her clients individual needs.  Aside from being a certified full spectrum doula she is also a Holistic Wellness Practitioner and Community Herbalist.

Her work is informed by the belief that doula care is community care. In her culture, they believe “it takes a village to raise a child,” and therefore her work is deeply rooted in communal interdependence, from infant to elder. She loves that her role as a doula connects her to a greater community of mothers, parents and families, many of whom have in turn become a part of her family’s village.

In addition to her wellness work, She is a scholar, educator & journalist with a focus on African-Indigenous cultural history and heritage. Over the past 10 years she has been active in community service and social justice work, volunteering for grassroots orgs in North Alabama, Tuskegee, Chicago and San Diego, and going on to co-found (Re)Birth Society, a community-led non-profit organization committed to justice, wellness, education and empowerment.

When Lissah is not supporting families she truly is enjoying her role as a Mama and spending time with her family.
